In a pivotal small-scale study, researchers discovered that liraglutide, a GLP‑1 receptor agonist similar to Ozempic, reduced migraine frequency by more than 50% in adults with chronic migraines who had not found relief with other treatments.
The trial included 31 individuals with obesity and high-frequency migraines.
After three months on a daily 1.8 mg dose, participants saw their average migraine days drop from 20 to about nine per month.
Remarkably, most study volunteers experienced noticeable relief within the first week of treatment.
This effect appeared largely independent of weight loss; participants lost minimal weight during the trial, suggesting the migraine benefit arises through a different physiological mechanism.
Researchers propose that liraglutide may lower intracranial (brain) pressure or modulate inflammation and hormone pathways associated with migraine attacks—an entirely new avenue compared to traditional treatments. A subset of participants experienced an even more profound reduction: seven individuals saw headache days drop by around 75%, and one reported no migraines at all.
Side effects were generally mild and transient, with nausea and constipation among the most common. No participant discontinued treatment due to these reactions.
While the results are preliminary and stem from an unblinded, open-label study without a placebo group, the magnitude of improvement has sparked interest. If future, larger-scale clinical trials support these findings, GLP‑1 drugs—already approved for diabetes and weight loss—could offer a novel treatment path for patients suffering from chronic, resistant migraines.
This development underscores the evolving potential of metabolic drugs to cross into neurology, offering hope to millions burdened by debilitating headaches.
