Obesity crisis: Future projections 'underestimated'

Estimates that half the UK population will be obese by 2050 "underestimate" the problem, a report has claimed. The National Obesity Forum said Britain was in danger of surpassing the prediction contained in a 2007 report. The lobbying group is calling for hard-hitting awareness campaigns, similar to the approach taken to smoking, to try to stem the problem.

Chairman Prof David Haslam said the crisis could get even worse than the "doomsday scenario" already set out.

The report stated: "It is entirely reasonable to conclude that the determinations of the 2007 Foresight Report, while shocking at the time, may now underestimate the scale of the problem."

The forum called for GPs to proactively discuss weight management with patients, and routinely measure children's height and weight and adults' waist size, it added.

Very bad news. Previous prediction was horrifying enough taking into account all kind of dresses that are linked to obesity and currently difficult or impossible to cure including type II diabetes and cancer

We just recently had a report that the number of overweight and obese adults in the developing world has almost quadrupled since 1980. One in three people worldwide is now overweight. They urged governments to do more to influence diets and this is becoming a point of debate - is this up to individuals or governments?

Governments have a big role to play like with smoking and cancer. There are now unambiguous warnings on cigarette packets. How about forcing processed food manufacturers to do the same. I found this suggestion on the internet. Put THIS PRODUCT CONTAINS so many gms OF SUGAR AND so many gms OF FAT. It will be far easier to make good choices and it'll probably cause a few shocks. Reply

The Future Diets report says this is due to changing diets and a shift from eating cereals and grains to the consumption of more fats, sugar, oils and animal produce. Very important findings

Obesity has become a world-wide epidemic. For the first time in human history, the number of overweight people rivals the number of underweight people

I think that keeping more closely to a lifestyle that human bodies evolved to experience is the key to tackle this problem Reply

People need to learn to cook from scratch. Then you know exactly how much fat is in what you eat.

Convenience foods are the problem here.

Obesity is responsible for a good proportion of healthcare costs and deaths in US and EU and now also In the developing South-East Asia Region - we are becoming increasingly aware of this but need to act better Reply

Lot of people are questioning using BMI calculator as the only parameter.
I also realise that there are many overweight and obese people, but a 'one size fits all' calculation devised by somebody following a set of theories is not the way to classify people's relative fatness. There is a need for better classification parameters Reply

We should not forget that obesity and under-nutrition often exist side by side. We also need to act urgently to deal with millions of cases of extreme hunger and under-nutrition in children.

The challenge is to make healthy diets viable whilst reducing the appeal of foods which carry a less certain nutritional value Reply
