Free version of Minecraft heading to Raspberry Pi

Minecraft developer Mojang has announced that a free edition of its open-world build-em-up is set for the Raspberry Pi.

The dedicated version of the game, dubbed Minecraft: Pi Edition, is being adapted from Minecraft: Pocket Edition, the mobile version of the game that runs on Android and iOS devices.

It’s apparently because of the educational emphasis of the Raspberry Pi that Mojang has elected to make Pi Edition available for free. The US$25 or $35 Linux computer, which is housed on a circuit board the size of a credit card, was designed to encourage children to program computers.

Mojang suggests that, with enough copies of its games, users could organize "the cheapest LAN party of all time." However, the company positions Minecraft: Pi Edition as an extension of the Pi’s ethos, with users able to "break open the code" to manipulate the game.

Other than "soon," there’s no word on an official release date as yet.
