Consumers are becoming digital omnivores

RATE THIS! +10
Posted in Business on 7th Jan, 2013 09:08 PM by AlexMuller

On the eve of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the state of digital consumption is looking good. In fact, consumers are becoming “digital omnivores,” adopting all sorts of smart, web-connected consumer technology.

That’s the pronouncement from Shawn Dubravac, a senior analyst at the first official press conference at CES, which starts for the press today and for industry professionals on Tuesday.

“We are quickly becoming digital omnivores,” Dubravac (pictured below) said. “The second screen is now robust. Ownership rates are going up for smartphones and tablets.”

The average household now has 1.4 tablets, compared to 1.2 a year ago. The number of TVs is 2.9 per household. And 98 percent of U.S. households own TVs. We spend 170 minutes a day watching those devices. Over time, Dubravac says, we will get to 98 percent penetration of smartphones and tablets. Right now, we spend 130 minutes a day on tablets and smartphones, he said.

Dubravac is one of the people who– every year at CES — figures out what the big trends are for the show.

This year, the show will have more than 3,300 exhibitors across 1.85 million square feet of space. Dubravac sees tablets and smartphones taking off, of course. Those are becoming the “second screens” that people use with their Smart TVs, or those that are connected to the Internet.

This is something which was ever thought by our parents who lived in an era where digital world of internet did not existed. Now the time has changed and good to see that we can buy a thing from our cellphones. Technology has moved so fast.

Thanks to Shawn Dubravac, for reporting at the CES regarding the digital technology. I feel that this is good news for our future. Sometimes I get aggrevated when people do not have manners with tablets and cell phones but yet, I am on my computer a great deal of the time.

I think I have expressed my low opinion of phones period often enough and tablets are even worse. People have no manners whatsoever with the abominations. They will even carry them into your house, sit on your couch and play with them. Just pure rude.

I guess all this could be considered a little contraversial, but to tell you the truth, I love most of the new stuff coming out. Then I suppose since my first computer, I have been hooked on the technology. I cannot foresee, a decrease ever in the usage and a total increase instead.

This is a good thing happening in modern era. Making everything digital means that we are progressing towards a time when there will be an order of thing waiting at your door by just the matter of one click. Reply

I reckon I like my smartphone well enough and I like to get on my PC when I have the time. I don't have a tablet and probably won't anytime soon ($$) or lack thereof, but I have to agree with old skybeast on the privacy bit. I ain't giving out any of my information online so I ain't ordering nothing to be waiting at my door. Reply

The digital world is ever evolving and will do nothing but increase from this time on, until a new extraordinary way of doing the same thing by a different method is had. The technology that is available today is nothing as to what it will be in 20 years from now, so look out if you don't like change, you have a problem.

In total agreement there Jeremiah, I absolutely am ready for all this new stuff too. I want a pair of those Google glasses when they get on the market, if there is any way I can afford them. Want to know how much they do and how they function. I am definitely a omnivore. Reply

I don't mind so much the change, so deska, it is that people need to remember the manners their parents taught them when using this new technology. It is still you in public or over the phone, so be polite, especially when in public.

I can agree with that one, but then people are so consumed with all this new technology that they do forget their manners or maybe they are just bored. Reply

Just for all you people who are so anxious to get your greedy little hands on all this new technology. About a half hour ago, I was dying for a hot cup of coffee. My coffee maker is a Bunn, a nice one, but not exactly the leading edge of your hot shot technology. Did I get my coffee? No the power was out for over an hour, in this whole section of town. So much for your hot shot new junk!. LOL Reply
